BIKEBUS
Getting kids to cycle again
Cape Town, South Africa
Weekly activity every Friday

The BikeBus is an initiative proudly supported by the Active Mobility Forum (AMF), aimed at promoting cycling as a practical and enjoyable means of commuting in Cape Town for all ages. Similar to Critical Mass, BikeBus is rooted in the idea of community and collective action, bringing cyclists together to create a safer, more visible presence on the city's streets.
The concept of the BikeBus originated from the global "bike train" movement, where groups of cyclists band together to form a "bus" of bikes, following a set route with designated "stops" along the way. The idea is to make cycling more accessible and less intimidating, especially for those who may be new to biking in urban environments. By riding together, participants can benefit from increased safety, visibility, and camaraderie.
In Cape Town, the BikeBus movement regained traction in 2023 as part of a broader push towards urban mobility that actually solves congestion when it comes to the famous school run. The initiative was inspired by similar efforts in cities like San Francisco, London, and Barcelona, where bike trains had successfully encouraged more people to take up cycling for their daily commute. Local cycling advocates and families, recognizing the need for a more organized approach to promote cycling, began coordinating BikeBus rides to coincide with events like Bike to Work Day and other cycling awareness campaigns.

The inaugural BikeBus runs in the Southern Suburbs part of the Southern AMF Chapter group. Anyone can join the group that cycles every Friday.
